If you become pregnant, you will be given a ‘booking appointment’ by a midwife on a Monday at which the midwife will ask you a few questions and carry out some general health checks. You will be seen throughout your pregnancy either at the practice on a Thursday, at the hospital or both.
Child health and immunisation - Monday 13:15 to 16:00. All new babies are invited for regular check-ups from eight weeks old. We also offer ‘drop in’ baby clinics on Mondays should you wish to get your baby weighed or need some general advice.
Contraception & pre-conceptual counselling - All of the doctors offer these services within their normal surgeries. It is important that an annual contraceptive check is undertaken and a 6 monthly blood pressure check.
Cervical Smears - A comprehensive programme of cervical smear taking and follow-up is provided for all eligible patients. You should receive a reminder from the Health Authority asking you to contact the surgery to make an appointment to have a smear taken when it is due, you will just need to make an appointment with one of the practice nurses. If you are unsure when your next smear is due or have any concerns regarding having a smear please contact the surgery and a member of staff will be happy to help, directing you to the best person to deal with your enquiry.
Free NHS Health Checks - NHS Health Checks are being offered to people aged between 40 and 74 who have not been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes and will be invited once every five years. The check is to assess your risk of developing the previously mentioned conditions. If there are any warning signs, then together we can do something about it. By taking early action, you can improve your health and prevent the onset of these conditions, there is good evidence for this. The check should take about 20 – 30 minutes and you will be seen by either a Practice Nurse or Health Care Assistant. The health check is based on straightforward questions and measurements such as age, sex, family history, height, weight and blood pressure. There will also be a simple blood test to measure your cholesterol level. Following the check, you will receive free personalised advice about what you can do to stay healthy and if necessary be given an appointment with the Practice Pharmacist for further help and advice. If you are outside of the age range and concerned about your health, you can contact the surgery to make an appointment with a GP.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.
There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below
It is important to make an appointment for a travel consultation with the Practice Nurse as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment may be required with the practice nurse if you require a course of vaccinations. Some vaccines have to be ordered if they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Please ensure you complete the travel questionnaire form at least one week before your appointment so the staff can give your form to the Practice Nurse so she can be prepared for your appointment.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
